It's my mum's birthday, well actually the 26th was her birthday and i
was late, but heres the render i did for her birthday card.

um, nothing unusual used here, standard tools, spatch for the candle,
moray for arranging and texturing, the candle flame is my lame media
attempt....

This pic in a slightly modified form will be going up on my greeting
card site hopefully this coming week.

Awww... that's cute. My mom's birthday is Sunday. Wish I could make nice
stuff like that to put on a card for her.
Very nice.

Ciao!

He can light the candle as well as blow it out.
Not even going to ask how you wrote the "Mom", surely not pain-staking
manual positioning of each little candied drops. Or did I just ask?

Yup. You got it. I can't remember how many of 'em there are, but thats
how i did it. not as difficult as it sounds since i use a modeller
though.

I had some problems with the candle though - i had to turn off it's
ability to cast shadows since the media flame caused an ugly grey shadow
around it on the cake, and if i turned off the flames ability to create
shadows, the glow from the light didn't go anywhere. <sigh> tradeoffs.
