I've once used a superellipsoid (man, this types real hard)
to model the front of a Sony DAT recorder. I realized it
was slow as hell, so I made a quick macro for rounded boxex
using boxes and cylinders and spheres. Renders a lot faster.

So I'ld suggest using unions of boxes, cylinders and spheres
if you just want the range of superellis you "indexed".

I think you would be surprised at how fast these rendered. I had
AA turned on and rendered the 640x480 image in under 6 minutes
on my p-200.

This sounds reasonable. But what I was doing was cutting lots
and lots of little holes into it, filling them with knobs
and whatnot. And it got slower and slower. As I switched to
the unioned box/cylinders/spheres it rendered at least 3
times faster (at least the part which contained the round box).
