This is an example for using Povray for video post processing. Mapping the video
frames to image_maps, part of the image is bent forward in time, part is bent
backward. The result is that every motion gets distorted. I applied the effect,
which i call "time turbulence" ;-) , to a free F1-racing clip found at
http://www.archive.org/details/rothmans-racing-team .

That's a really intriguing video.  The technique you've described reminds me of
the 'slit-scan' effect that was pioneered by Douglas Trumbull for 2001: A SPACE
ODYSSEY (and before that by John Whitney for his experimental films.) You've
given it a new twist.

I've been using POV-Ray as a post-processing 'compositor' myself lately (but
only for pre-made POV animations...adding motion blur and such.) If you don't
mind me asking a sort of off-topic (and rather basic) question: How are you
turning your video frames into images for use as POV image_maps? That's
something I'm very interested in doing. My own video is not digital,
unfortunately, but from a Hi-8 camera. (And the first thing I need to do is to
get that video into the computer, of course. I'm looking at various
software/hardware choices, so that's not too difficult.)

But for the video-to-image_map step, are you using commercial software? Any tips
you might offer will be appreciated.

Hi Ken, thank you for your comment! :)
For converting a video into an image sequence, I use VirtualDub. It's free, and
you can use it for both converting video to images (by File->Export->Image
Sequence) as well as for converting an image sequence into a video (File->Open
video file, File type: Image sequence). So I used that tool to obtain the
images from the video and also to make a new video from the rendered images.

Thanks much. I actually *have* VirtualDub, sitting right here on my desktop--and
I haven't even played around with it yet! Duh...
