The sun is just circling around overhead; I guess this is at the south
pole in the summer or something, though I don't know how all the sand
got there. ;-)
The pole is there for a reference to tell where the light is coming
from. This is the first time I've tried my sand with another object in
the scene, and you can see that I have a bit of fiddling to make it look
right.
I've already started adding some absorbing media; I think I may need to
jack both the scattering and absorbing media way up (and maybe even add
some emissive media for ambient) to make it work right. (In fact, I
think I have two much absorbing media for the amount of scattering in
this render--the sand is too dark.)
Or I could just bring the two surfaces much closer together; I don't
know yet whether that would make the SSS stop working.
