Greetings!

Here is a small sample video of the huge SENECA, an imperial carrier ship.
While the SENECA is, meanwhile, in a much more advanced development stage,
the video clip shows her in her earlier but still very impressive days.

AVI (MS MPEG4 v2 video codec and Microsoft ADPCM sound codec), ca. 2.98 MB
--> http://www.Jamaica-Focus.com/m/SENECA.avi

More pics of the SENECA are of course inside the "povray.binaries.images"
newsgroup, with similar names like this thread.

Enjoy!

Sven

The sparkling really takes a lot away from it, though I know that's
really just a lack of resolution due to a desire to keep file size low.

But otherwise, pretty nice!

Wow impressive! I agree with DJ Wiza that the low resolution really
hurts this but it's still very nice. The music and engine sounds really
help it along too!

Hi DJ,

thanks for your comment! Actually, if you describe the flickering lights on
the ship with "sparkling", it seems to be an error of POV-Ray (the version
3.6). The full-size video has the same flickering lights (of course),
unfortunately. I am not happy about it.

Have you seen the image collections of the ship?

Greetings,

Sven

It looks like there are large scale (~up to a hundred pixels across)
frame-to-frame brightness variations, as well as smaller-scale stuff. You
didn't render this with radiosity on, did you?

Do the individual frames differ so drastically? It looks like video
compression issues, IMHO. Also, did you perhaps forget to turn of jitter?

I agree that there are very strong video compression artefacts visible, but
I don't think they're all that's going on. The regions of elevated
brightness follow the hull, not the compression blocks, and they're very
soft features. If they're the result of radiosity associated with Sven's
window texture (which I think I read elsewhere had a high ambient value),
then these regions would naturally flicker because the radiosity sampling
would change from frame to frame (and those are very small features anyway,
so they'd require very good sampling indeed).

The background's brightness (not its distortion) flickers slightly but not
over lots of nearby compression blocks that I saw, which again suggests to
me a lighting issue, not a compression one.

On the other hand, I've never used or seen this particular codec before, so
I could easily be completely mistaken.

Greetings alltogedda!

This small video is a recompiled copy of a larger 800x600 video. That, too,
has these bad flickering effects. It is not a result of any video codec.

I rendered the animation with radiosity turned on, and jittering
consequently turned off. And yes, Tom is right, the ship has 3 layers, the
first layer featuring an ambient-5.0-pigment-White texture.

Tom, you say that this could be the reason for the flickering, right? What
can I do to get rid of the flickering? Setting the ambient down to 1.0? and
what else? Any way to change the sampling, and would that help?

PS: for those who want to get larger versions: there is a fast playing
(lesser seconds) version of 45 MB, and the real freaky full-size original
monster video of 124 MB. But if you want to get it, you need to tell me how!
;-)

Greetings,

Sven

Turn off radiosity. It doesn't usually do anything for space renders that
you can't do with ordinary lights. Keep the textures as is, mimic the
window lighting effect of radiosity using spotlights with fade_power and
fade_distance set, or if you want it easier, use post-production effects to
achieve the lighting bloom (for which you'd probably want an external 2D
paint application).

The reasons for the flicker, I'm guessing, are to do with the way that
radiosity works (see the manual, 3.3.4 for a few more details on it). Your
scene is a problem for radiosity, because you've got rapid changes in
ambient light over a small area (your windows) - this damages one of the
approximations that radiosity works under. When a radiosity patch is
sampled, a large number of rays are sent out from it to estimate the
indirect illumination falling on it (as described in the docs). Half the
problem is probably that your windows are so small that they are likely
missed by many samples. The other half of the problem is that your
viewpoint is changing, so different samples are taken each frame, giving
rise to flicker as a window is sampled differently (or not at all) in some
frames to others. The flicker is so strong because your windows have such
high ambient values.

Increasing the radiosity quality settings (like "Count") and decreasing the
ambient setting for the windows would help, but I don't think this will
completely remove the effects - radiosity just wasn't optimised for this
sort of scene, as I understand it.

Tom,

thanks a lot for your information. I still hope some of the POV-Ray
developers have a chance to read this posting and will decide in the future
to offer a solution which is not affected by ambient values and the other
factors causing this flickering.

I will try out to reduce the ambient value, let's see how it turns out.

Greetings,

Sven
