Hehe, I hoped you'd ask that question!
If the tunnel was a torus, it'd make perfect sense, right? But the
tunnel is not a torus. However, the mapping is taken from a torus.
The displacement of the tunnel is UV-mapped (and so are the textures).
But instead of taking the mapping from a square in the xy-plane, I took
it from a torus. Well, technically, I made a function which mapped the
pattern on the surface of a torus onto a square in the xy-plane, and
like all uv-mapping, this square was then mapped onto the tunnel. I then
just placed two copies of the tunnel in the scene, one in extension of
the other.
A side effect is that the granite pattern in the tunnel is slightly more
squeezed together in the left side than in the right, but it's so little
that it's not noticeable.

It's an interesting idea.

That's weird... that's exactly what I thought... Not
necessarily Ronald Reagan's, but anyway...
Scary indeed...
Best,

I was just kidding. It's hard to picture a tunnel that's not underground.

How about a tunnel through a swirly mist, a tunnel through space-time (a
worm hole), or a tornado?

Is the movement a spline or is it artificial intelligence navigating the
interior?
Why don't you put up some more images at zazzle if you're bored?

My existing images are not good enough in my opinion, except one, which
will require quite some reworking before it will look good at a higher
resolution. And creating new images requires inspiration...
