Hey,

I'm trying to make a smooth trail of smoke with Rune's particle system, but
I have a little problem. There are 1400 particles in this animation, for
each of the 3 sticks (so there are actually 1400*3 particles, but they are
just copied from the first stick.) But no matter how many particles I use,
they gather in "bubbles". I use a high particle_steps of 2000 but it doesn't
help.

Rune?

Otherwise it's a nice particle system that is easy to set up.
Good documentation. Sorry that this anim is dull.

I can't tell the cause of the problem from your description. Feel free
to send the scene file to me so I can have a closer look.

(To everyone else: Please note that the particle system is in the beta
stage, and it can not yet be downloaded from anywhere because it isn't
released yet.)

I'll bet this is a step resolution problem.  In the real world, there are
some unimaginable number of "steps" per unit time, and things are happening in
all of them- therefore, a nice overlap instead of seeing room sized quantum
effects.
    Your artifact is undoubtedly due to your quantum of time - the unit frame.
Perhaps you could calculate the interpolation frames and where those smoke
particles would be and what their diameters would be for the in-between stages.

I thought Rune's system takes this into consideration.

Yes please. :)

The particles being clustered together in groups should only happen when
a too low step rate is used, and it sounds like you're using a high step
rate, so I'd be interested in seeing the file.

For the reference:

After having seen the scene file, I emailed Hugo my explanation. It
turned out that it was not a problem with the particle engine, but a
slight misinterpretation of the documentation, which implies that I
probably need to make a few things more clear.
