Maybe it's because the floor simply gets too white? As the shadows
'disappear' the floor seems to be more white than our system can display
(you know the range is clipped between 0-255) and since the shadows are
'light grey' they may turn into 'pure white' as well...?

I just tried the same animation without radiosity, and it seems fine, so
I assume it must the the radiosity causing the problems.
But it makes them look so pretty! :(

Still not necessarely. By turning off radiosity the floor might become less
white, thus the shadows are nolonger clipped. This is just a theory. You
could try the animation with radiosity but with less strength of light.
