Nice, but the flame should be a LOT longer than that. It should have a
shockwave (small disk-like disturbance in the flame when it goes from
being a supersonic flow to a subsonic flow)soon after it leaves and the
walls of your nozzle need to be a lot thinner than this or they will
melt!

Sorry to nitpick, but I studied to be a rocket scientist...

Very funny...and what do you consider a "major" OS?

Well, technically, it is "available" for Mac OS, but you have to use
Microsoft Media Player...it isn't available for as a codec for QuickTime
to use.

So what you are really saying is that yes you could view animations
compiled under divx but for the sake of your principals you cannot
allow yourself to do so. Isn't that like intentionally shooting your
own foot and then complaining about it ?

Divx is now open source, so it will possibly become available in other

That's a good thing isn't it? - Quick time blows chunks.

Basically what he is saying is that it is usually better to stick with
native software. Most people use MP (Microsoft) on Windows and
QuickTime (Apple) on Macs. The opposite has often proved to be a bad
idea (from a stability point of view).

Are you sure he is not really saying that he is a Mac user, he loves
his Mac, he thinks MS products are crap, and he just refuses to use
MS products because it would undermine his loyalty to Macs ? He runs
a risk if he starts using MS products and actually finds he likes them
that he may eventually lose faith in Mac and become part of the
mainstream...

It wouldn't be the first time someone has taken this position no
matter how irrational it may seem. I love Ford cars and hate
Cheveys. I can't say why but I wouldn't own a Chevy if someone
gave me one. I would sell it and buy a Ford from the proceeds.

Um, no...what I am saying is that I dislike the Mac version of Windows
Media Player, and don't want to subject my system to the combination of
that software and a beta codec just so I can view the occasional DivX
animation.

No. Installing it and then complaining would be, though...

The QuickTime Player is..."poorly designed". ;-)
But don't confuse it with QuickTime itself, which is a very nice piece
of software. And Microsoft Media Player...well, it's just awful. The Mac
version, at least, is even worse than QuickTime Player...

3ivx looks more interesting anyway...

Um, no, that isn't what I am saying. I am only saying that the Mac
version of Windows Media Player is a piece of junk.
I even downloaded the latest released version (6.3), and it was as bad
as I remembered...and probably won't be on my system for much longer.
(BTW, I downloaded it with Internet Explorer...the page didn't load
properly under iCab)

> he is a Mac user,

Right.

Again, right.

> he thinks MS products are crap,

A surprisingly large number of them anyway...specifically the Mac port
of Windows Media Player.

> and he just refuses to use MS products because it would undermine his

I refuse to use Windows Media Player because it is an awful piece of Mac
software and it would undermine the stability of my system. See the part
right after me being a Mac user...

No risk of that...I have used, and do use Microsoft products.

how can a codec be illegal - unless you have nicked it.

because it is an "improved" (read: hacked) version of a
commercially available codec.
