Just something I'm part way through making. On a cyrix MII 300, 60M ram it
took 5 hours 23 minutes to render, no AA. The pattern on the surface is
incomplete

Forgot to add. MegaPov 0.6a, with MegaMetals used
Rendered at 320x240, rescaled in animation for space reasons

I know, but for some reason Animation Shop hasn't been saving the AVIs. It
says it is, but the file is 0k :(
Maybe I'll just upload & post a link. Sorry 'bout that.

Nope, just something off the top of my head. Designed for a present. And
believe it or not the final design will quite likely be made in silver :)

If you'd like to make an MPEG out of, for example, Targa files from POV-Ray,
you can use CMPEG, a freeware DOS utility that many POVers use. You can
find it here:
ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/.1/garbo/garbo_pc/graphics/cmpeg10.zip

Thanks, I'll give it a whirl. I usually render to Bitmap. Oh, final version
underway. 240x180, AA on at 0.3, only 90 frames otherwise the poor Cyrix
would be busy for several days. Thinned the band somewhat so it's less
clunky. It IS for a female finger, after all

I don't understand why it's so slow? Or is that about the normal speed
for the tracer you're using? Do you have a huge load of IOR going on or
something? The ring is surrounded by blackness so it isn't reflecting
other refracting objects and for only 90 frames... What sort of
primitives or math did you use in the source file? Are you
multi-tasking heavily?
I'm not accusing you or anything of foul play here... ;o) but I'm
really curious.

I think it's just because he's using a *Cyrix*, which aren't very fast when
it comes to doing the processing needed for raytracing.

More a case of a very low performance chip. I've seen this Cyrix out
performed by a Pentium 166 with 16M of memory. With only Exporer, Systray
and Megapov, the final 90 frames took 9.5 hours. Mind you, it was shooting
photons for over an hour of that time. Plus the ring itself is composed of
840 blobbed spheres - 360 for the ring, 480 for the pattern. The setting is
made of blobbed cylinders. The gem is a plain ruby sphere. Blobs always take
ages, anyway (at least for me)

There isn't much for photons to do in this scene...you might as well
turn them off and save the calculation time.

Nail on the head. Cyrix FPUs aren't the best around. From what I've read,
even when they were new they were bottom of the ladder. Strictly business
CPUs, I'm afraid. Pity I didn't know that until after we'd forked out
AU$2000 for this thing in 98. But if I can scrounge up a K6II I won't need a
new motherboard, at least

Photon mapping simulates light refracting through transparent or
reflecting off reflective objects onto other surfaces...if you don't
have anything for them to show up on, you are just wasting time shooting
photons. All of the surfaces in this image appear to be either
transparent or reflective, with nothing for the caustics to have much of
an effect on.

It does have some effect on more complex items, such as hollow objects with
glass objects inside, doesn't it?

If there are no surfaces or media for the photons to show up on, they
will only slow things down. They behave like any other illumination.
Glass usually won't show them, and most metals will only have a slight
visible effect. If you entire scene is a complex object composed of
highly reflective metal and completely transparent glass, you will just
drive up your render time.
However, if you put that object in a box or on a plane with a mostly
non-reflective, opaque texture, or use media...

As far as I can tell, there is no Mac codec for it, which means I can't
play any DivX-encoded movies. There *is* a player for it...but it
requires the Mac version of Microsoft Media Player...bleh.

If the timber has any reflective qualities, the photons will reflect off it
on to other objects. Also, for example, if you have a shiny metal ring
sitting on a timber surface, you'll get photons shining off the metal on to
the timber surface.

Try compressing it with MPEG, that way everyone will be able to view it as
there are lots of players for many different platforms.
You might consider using a utility like AVI2MPG if you want to keep an AVI
copy, without having to render to Targas.
