Christoph's Icy Coast image at p.b.i. had me wanting to do a fly-over of a
ridged multifractal landscape (again). This was originally a 480x240 pixel
panoramic view without AA (it smudged the sharp details even at +a1.0 +r1)
so was a fairly fast render at about 2m 45s a frame, 240 frames. To get it
uploadable here I had to rescale and encode at a terrible bit-rate in Video
Mach 2, so it actually does look much better in the 8 megabyte version. I
thought I had the isosurface doing okay until I realized there's a slice of
sunlight shining through a mountain into the shadow around midway through
the animation. Not visible in this degraded mpeg.
A slope dependant texture I've had a while is modified for this. I hope to
get a better file uploaded to a web space later on, in the meantime I hope
this one at least plays after taking the time to D/L it.

Let me try that again, other reply hopefully cancelled:
Good to know you think so, however I'm not going to upload the 8 meg mpeg
file after all. It's just not good enough. The textures are randomizing
causing a jittering effect, although +j0 was set to prevent actual jitter
(heck, no antialiasing was used anyhow).
However I've uploaded the medium version, it's under 4 megs and is 360x180
and 240 frames. Another major reason was finding that I get a choppy
playback of the larger file. This smaller one is smooth like it ought to
be, but I wouldn't count on that on every machine or player.
Here's the URL (as I currently know it):
http://jove.prohosting.com/~omnivers/html/raytraces/anims/flightmw.mpg
It's a brand new place for me. I finally followed the leader over to this
web host (thanks Ron Parker, Mike Hough, and whoever else may have suggested
the place).
Don't count on downloading this file immediately, I couldn't yet and it's
even my own site.
Sorry for the trouble if you get nothing but a 404 there.

now all you need is chris colefax's spline macro for your camera to add
pitch, roll, and direction change to get rid of the sideways movement.
i am going to check out your higher res version. good job bob.

try

Thanks, I had no idea the "html" part was an unnecessary or wrong part of
the URL. I don't understand this special URL stuff yet at all and I still
can't get the file downloaded. Wondering if I have to set some sort of
permissions up now since I read something about it someplace. Wish I had
checked into this further before posting.

Thanks, not 'copter enough? :-) I've had the spline generator and the macro
almost since they were first available I believe. Just went with an easy
flight path for the tests, plus I don't always put a lot of effort into all
aspects of something anyhow.
Sure hope people can get to the better mpeg file someday, I'm still trying
to get a look at it from the web site myself to check if it went okay.
As Dick Balaska has said the "html" directory of the URL is wrong to have in
there.

Zoiks!!
I found out what went wrong, maybe. Everything under the HTML folder at
that web site is considered to be a html web file and nothing else. Or so
it would seem. I right-clicked on the link once there and to my amazement
the flightmw.mpg showed up as flightmw.htm !
So please excuse my total ignorance. I will move the file to another
location or fix it somehow eventually I hope. So sorry to be wasting
anyones time like this. I need to ask questions at povray.off-topic instead
of continuing blindly here.

The link http://jove.prohosting.com/~omnivers/raytraces/anims/flightmw.mpg
works for me.
Prohosting free service isn't what it was when I first signed up. In addition
to the new ad banners, they did something so that you have to go to another
web page that says "to continue downloading this file..." Therefore you can't
link directly to a file like you used to. It also seems to cause problem with
windows media player, so the file needs to be saved to disk before opening.

Thanks Mike, that's at least an explanation not read about anywhere, but I
think I fouled it up now by changing "permissions" on it and the parent
folder... poof! it all disappeared. Will have to check into uploading again
later.
I looked around at other places and ProHosting still has enough going for it
over those, amount of space being a big reason. Other places want even more
control over how files are done, so in the meantime I'll keep this one.
Bothersome as it may be to all.

Alright, this thing is now at my XOOM web space so get it while it's warm
(not hot, get it?).
http://members.xoom.com/omniverse/flightmw.mpg Under 4 megabytes.
I'm keeping the xoom place around I guess. I had a 30 minute upload but a
unusually slow download when checking the file. I consistently have a 2KB
connection for comparison.
I wish everyone who tries it out much luck and a speedy d/l. It should go
flawlessly though.
Reminder: the grainy appearence is not from 'jitter' being on, no
antialiasing was used in order to keep a sharpness to it. I think it's the
'granite' normals causing the random twinkling of the dirt and vegetation
textures.
I apologize once again to those who had trouble getting this animation
before.

Just saw your animation today (i'm not reading p.b.a that frequently) and liked
it, even though your plane's pilot seems very drunk :-) RMF seems very good for
animations.
BTW for your information: My download rate from your ProHosting-Adress was about
33kb/sec while i got 58kb/sec with your xoom-accout.

Albeit slow. With AA on, and a postage stamp sized180x90 frame, my 500MHz
PC does each at an average of 50 seconds. Multiply that by 320 as I
currently am doing and it's about 4 1/2 hours per full test. Not terribly
bad, but not fast by any means.

Hey, wow, that's good to know. Bad for ProHosting, but good for XOOM. Been
thinking it over and with XOOM offering up plenty enough space (500MB
storage) and direct links I might as well use it more rather than quit it.
I reread the TOS and I'm not too worried about them using content on their
site for the sole purpose of promoting themselves. Just wouldn't want it to
go beyond that. 'nuf said.
Btw, cable modem, DSL, dial-up? Which is it you use there, may I ask?

I know, just tried to use an isosurface for my ice floes, cancelled the first
render... Of course that's extreme because of Rune's quite complicated
construction.

I'm envious. That was going to be my 4th guess (I'm lying). Just now going
to get a cable modem and quit the satellite TV. That wireless stuff will
probably be available soon after I get familiar with cable. Sarcasm

I put another animation at http://members.xoom.com/omniverse/mtnlakes.mpg
and it's just a tiny 180x90 res., but 320 frames. The odd resolution is
incompatible with CMpeg (or my media players) so it's rough around the edges
but a good file size at 704KB. Would have been 950KB posted here so I
thought it best to upload to the web space.
Things to note about it: a mysterious lake depth change occurs near the
beginning. Only the texture is scaled but neither the plane that makes the
water surface nor the isosurface has a scale in it themselves. Not a clue
as to why this is.
This animation is doing a time-lapse sort of thing with snow and vegetation
changes which might not be too noticeable at first. I've got to get a
spline path put in! The camera is not moving too well yet.
Enjoy it for what it's worth.

Looks great, esp. the last part.
For showing the change of ice/vegetation, a sequence with stationary camera

A true pioneer work back in 2000... and today, 16.5 years later I would
like to ask you whether I may convert it in a way that my Commodore 64
and/or Atari 1040 STFM would be able to display it! At a mere 160 by 96,
I would even have to scale it *up* to have it fitting into the C 64's
multicolor mode, as my pre-GEOS C 64 does not have any window manager
(and I have no experience yet in interrupt demo programming). Currently
I am not sure whether the C 64's floppy drive actually would be able to
stream it in full length - I probably would have to add a second VC 1541
floppy drive (or go for the fabulous 1-megabyte SFD-1001, but the chance
of finding one seems next to zero...).
However, on the Atari ST with its 720 kilobyte diskettes, it probably
would run nicely in a TOS window, be it in monochrome, 4-color or
16-color mode.
Regardless of all these pre-considerations, I firstly would simply
convert it to color depths that just look like those native classic
computer modes, but run on a modern-day PC, so I might publish it
directly here without having it to video from the C 64's or Atari ST's
screen...
See you in Khyberspace (which might also incarnate in an "AtariSTan" or
even "Amig(h)anistan" version)!

convert it to color depths that just look like those native classic
computer modes, but run on a modern-day PC, so I might publish it
directly here without having it to video from the C 64's or Atari ST's
screen...

See you in Khyberspace (which might also incarnate in an "AtariSTan" or
even "Amig(h)anistan" version)!

Ahhh nostalgia... that sure is going back in time. Go ahead and good luck!
I tried to find the file that creates the animation to give you and I have a
ridged multifractal mountains and lakes scene from the following year. I had
added a flying car.
There's a problem with it. MegaPOV 0.7 was used and it refuses to render the way
it is now with MegaPOV 1.2.1.
I probably have the older versions archived away, no idea where though.
If I knew how to correct the reflection and slope texture_map statements I would
know for certain if this was the file.
I will go ahead and post it to the binaries scene-files group anyway. Maybe it
can be used somehow. It requires Chris Colefax's Clockmod.inc, too.

A wild ride in POV-Ray air over the mountains and lakes.
The original (or close to it) is now partially updated to POV-Ray 3.7, this low
resolution short animation is from the latest file posted at
binaries.scene-files:
http://news.povray.org/web.589c7136c3d0ae5d9c5d6c810%40news.povray.org
Be sure to read the other messages there, camera view is erratic due to what I
guess was my attempt to show multiple camera angles. Took 50 minutes to render
150 frames at 320x240 with my i5 processor @ 3.4GHz.

New and improved, and maybe that's saying too much. LOL
Too large a file for here, almost 7 MB.

Still a wild ride because of a crumbling natural bridge fly-thru, and my sloppy
attempt at slowing the flight at that point in the animation. I messed up the
cubic spline path there, it was supposed to move slowly past the natural bridge.
Timed it wrong.
No worries, you can retry it yourself. Posting the updated scene file at
binaries.scene-files once again. Better clouds in motion and casting shadows.
Although parameters are minimal quality, for isosurface too, for faster frame
rendering.
At least I got rid of the annoying camera discontinuities caused by adding
different vectors together from one clock range to the next, see previous SDL.
This particular animation, 320X240 and 600 frames with default antialiasing,
took about 10 hours on a i5 processor @ 3.4GHz.
