This is an early preview of a project I've been working on for some time.
It's a cyclic animation, so please view it in cyclic mode.
It's not supposed to be "cartoon-rendered" in the final version (though I
haven't definitely decided yet), but right now it was a nice workaround for
the lacking texturing, lightning, and
details.
Hope you like Al the Alien... :-)
Greetings,
Rune

I don't like the head. It's ugly (at least from behind). The legs could also
be a bit thicker (more muscular), don't you think?

Very nice...
This particular kind of model probably looks a lot more 'believable' in
cartoon-mode than in a supposedly realistic shot, though -- it's limbs,
shape of head have a rather cartoonish ring to it, so the cartoon-render
actually emphases this and makes it look good.
If you would put it in a life-like environment, it will probably look very
out-of-place.
Nevertheless, it's very nice. :)

I agree it's a little strange - he has a rather large back head. But I think
it makes him "special".
> The legs could also be a bit thicker (more muscular), don't you think?
No, actually I like the funny thin cartoony legs. Right now the arms and
legs are simply cylinders. That will be changed later, but I don't think I
will make the legs thicker.
I've used Victor Navone's excellent alien a lot for inspiration. You can see
it here. (Note the thin legs).

But as I said, this is just an early stage. A lot of things will be changed.

I personally think that cartoony 3D animations with a 2D look are cool, but
cartoony 3D animations without the 2D look are even more cool!
Have a look at
http://dwp.bigplanet.com/vnavone/home/
If the alien there had had the 2D look I don't think it had been nearly as
cool...
But then again, it's just my personal opinion :-)

I don't know, I think fully shaded models look better.
See my reply to Marc-Hendrik Bremer.

I think it is possible to make scenes look cartoony without having to make
them 2D-like.

I was sure someone would have mentioned the similarity to the Grinch (who
stole Christmas) character, so guess I have now.
It's not the cartooniness I like, it's the movements. Very nice.

This is cool. The cartoonish look makes this really cool, I can't tell that
it's 3D. He needs an environment to play with...
How much can this model do besides walk?

That'll come later. Haven't thought of anything specific yet though.

When it's finished, and if everything turns out as I hope, it will be fully
posable, with support for animation naturally integrated.

Is that a character from the movie "Nightmare Before Chrismas"? I've never
seen that movie, but I've heard a lot about it. If it was not, then never
mind.

It was supposed to be running, but it didn't quite turn out that way. Thanks
anyway.

Uh, Dr. Suess. Children's book writer/illustrator. There was a cartoon movie
of How The Grinch Stole Christmas among others like Horton Hears A Who and
other such strange children's stories.

Apparently going to be a movie out this winter with Jim Carry (The Mask, The
Truman Show, etc.) as the Grinch too.

I'm especially impressed with the fluidity of the animation.
In my own projects, I've successfully coded ways to POSE a figure, but still
don't have a handle on how to get graceful motion between my keyframes.
Splines suck. How did you do it?

Sorry for not replying sooner. I hadn't noticed that there was a new reply
to this old thread.
I have coded this character from scratch to use inverse kinematics. That's a
lot of work, and I've not finished it at all yet, but I think it will pay
off when I am to animate this character eventually.
For this animation I simply used some sine functions to move the different
part of the body. Note though, that I don't have to specify any angles for
the elbows, knees, etc., but simply specify where I want the hands/feet to
be. That way the animation almost automatically becomes more fluid and
natural.
When I'm going to animate this character eventually, I plan to drop the sine
functions and use splines instead. I think this will work well with inverse
kinematics.
Hope this helps!
Greetings,
Rune

Aha. I thought my FK man was brilliant, but then went it came to animate with
splines, sines, cosine-splines, etc., it sucked.....
