For quite a while I've been working on an anim for the current IRTC topic.
For a number of reasons, however, the anim stands no chance of being completed in
time, so before I abandon the project, I thought I'd post the most promising part
of it.
The sparks are simple media spheres made in my particle system, and the wall
is a heightfield defined using a pigment (I love this feature). Pretty simple
stuff. The idea was to have a gun fire a beam to create the cut, but this didn't
make it into the test (the gun was modelled, but not textured).
I hope you like it. As usual, comments etc. most welcome.

How did you achieve that "motion blur" in the sparks? Also, how did you get
the "scar" in the metal? Very well done, congratulations!

Fernando.

The "motion blur" effect is just a scaled sphere with media. No tricks there. The
gouge in the block was done with a heightfield. A better explaination would be
quite a bit longer, but the source should be up tomorrow for you to look at if
you are interested.

That looks great!

Besides the scaled media sphere particles it looks like you also have a big
turbulated media sphere in the middle. Don't you? In a few of the frames,
this sphere seems to be visible intersecting the gray box, and that doesn't
look quite right.

Anyway, I've tried making particle sparks myself before, but have failed to
make it look good. This animation should provide the needed inspiration! :)
I already have support for the faked motion blur, so it really should be
just a matter of tweaking the media to look right, which however no doubt is
a bit tricky.

Yes, there is a big media sphere there. I also agree that it intersects the box
in odd ways too. Perfection is just too darned hard to achieve :-). I would never
have been able to fix this _and_ get everything else done that I had planned, so
I cut my losses and decided to move onto other interesting animation ideas.
