Rendering scenes/advanced/grenadine.pov as it is gives a nearly completely
black picture. Commenting out the assumed_gamma statement doesn't make a
difference. Changing the photon spacing in global_settings { } to higher
values (>0.03) renders the scene correctly.

I've tried to make a more minimal scene out of it with just the lightsource,
the red liquid (no bubbles) and the background (photon settings, object
locations &c unchanged). This, however, doesn't manifest the issue.
Clearly, the problem must be somewhere else...

Hang on, just found that the problem disappears when NOT rendering in BSP
mode (so without command-line option +b2). I might try to make some
different abbreviated scenes to see exactly when the problem arrises, but
for now I hope this is of any use...

Following up, the problem only appears when the scene is rendered in its
totality (with +b2 on as mentioned). When one of the main objects (object
{Glass}, object {Liquid} or object {LemonSlice ...) is commented out, the
remainder renders fine. Also commenting out either the "collect off" or the
"pass_through" statements in the object photon blocks at the end of the main
file gives a proper result. Getting everything back in again results in
darkness again.
