Folks,
I would appreciate it if some of you could sanity-check the RC5
windows installer, which may be found here:
http://www.povray.org/beta/povwin-3.7.RC5-setup.exe
Please advise if you have any installation issues.

Installed successfully on Windows 7 x64.
Note that I tried running it without elevation to see what
would happen and got the elevation dialog. Does this mean a
per-user install is no longer supported? Personally I don't
mind but based on previous posts some people do.
Two minor issues:
- The name of the desktop icon is quite long and the version number
got truncated (...). As the "for Windows" part is rather redundant
on a Windows desktop I'd suggest to just use "POV-Ray v3.7 RC5".
- It seems the help index has been fixed, but by chance the first
item I tried was "pigment_pattern" (with underscore), and this mapped
to the documentation for "pavement".
Regards,
Christian

For the name of the icon, I think that only "POV-Ray v3.7 RC" would be
enough.
A test should be made for the partial name "POV-Ray v3.7", and if found,
only update that shortcut, or replace it. I have the habit of shortening
and simplifying to long icon's names, and get duplicates.

Hello,
I have a problem with registering .pov-files to the right POV-Ray application.
Namely, when I double-click on a .pov-file, it opens in the 32-bit POV-Ray
application (pvengine.exe). My operating system is Windows 7 Home premium
64-bit. I cannot change that association to the 64-bit application
(pvengine64.exe) because my Windows doesn't accept opening the file in that when
I use the command "Open with..". Only pvengine.exe becomes an application in the
list of suitable applications.
I can drag and drop .pov-files to the editor if it's already open, but not if
only the Messages-tab is open.
RC4 registered the file types correctly. I uninstalled that before installing
RC5.

I now tried this too and found that in my case, the POV files
were still associated with my 3.6 installation. Associating it
with pvengine64.exe did not work, associating it with pvengine.exe
worked but connect to the render command instead of open (???).
The command under
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\povfile\shell\Open\command
appeared to be correct. After deleting
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.pov\UserChoice
everything worked fine (Windows 7 x64). So possibly Windows got confused
with an earlier manual association, but the behavior was still strange.

I am not getting any file association with .pov files with both RC4 and RC5.
RC3 and earlier did this okay.
If I open a .pov file I get the windows pop-up asking me to pick a program
or search for one and have to do it manually.
I thought it was perhaps my windows installation causing this but maybe its
not?

I am getting something similar. If I select a pov file and open it, it
opens with notepad. (I think that I set this manually a while ago.) If I
use "open with" I get the option of opening it with RC3 or ver 3.5.
I still have 3.5 in case I want to use Moray.
I cannot say what it did before as I hardly ever open pov files that way.

In my computer the command under
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\povfile\shell\Open\command
points to the deleted folder of RC4 and I cannot modify that. The Modify-command
in regedit is greyed out.

I fixed the path in the command under
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\povfile\shell\Open\command
but I cannot delete the entry
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.pov\UserChoice
I can edit this entry, but what should I write in it?
My computer also executes the Render command in pvengine.exe by double-clicking
on a .pov-file.

Same for me on Windows 7 x64. I had not tested this before because I
never open pov files this way, but no program is recognized and has to
be selected manually. I don't know how it was with older versions.

I am running Win XP64, and I cannot install the RC5 version. I have RC3
installed, and have had no issues. I get the following error message:

Thanks for the report - we're aware of this issue but are having
difficulty in tracking down the cause. If you want to assist in
tracking it down by running some additional tests please drop me an

Some standard locations no longer need to be defined in povray.ini. The
scene and include folders are now in a stable location and don't need to
be explicitely defined.

That was the case previously, however this has changed with RC4 as a
number of users wanted the ability to change the default locations.
The default paths should not generally be needed in povray.ini as
POVWIN automatically adds them to the include path based on
information in the registry.
However I can see there might be a case for having them in the INI
file anyhow, e.g. if another program wants to parse the INI file (e.g.
a console build of POV that doesn't have the windows registry logic).

This technically isn't needed by POVWIN. I am undecided if it's a good
idea to include them in the INI file as well. It would be useful for
non-standard builds to parse the INI file, but would also make it less
portable (currently POVWIN will infer the correct information based on
the registry and/or launch path).

That is true, for instance Bishop3D will read the ini file to add paths
to its own importer.
But I miss-read the text and thought it said that Windows would
automatically append standard locations on installation.
