This may be corrected already, but I've noticed if an object with SSLT
is set to gather photons, it really alters the appearance of the object,
causing it to be much darker than it was.

That is to be expected: POV-Ray's code for classic illumination handling
totally suppresses light shining through any photon target to any photon
gathering object, in order to delegate those computations to the photons
code. As SSLT does not yet support photons, that leaves the SSLT object
in full shadow even if the shadow-casting object is fully transparent.
