No, it isn't allowed by the license to disable the copyright messages of
POV-Ray.

I am not looking to disable the copyright, it is also in the messages window
of the IDE. I just don't want the splash screen popping up every time when
I run pov in the background from an external batch file. I guess from your
answer, it is not possible with 3.5. I will wait to see if I can make the
request for 4.0 to have the option.
Thanks for the quick reply

Your best bet here is probably to wait until the 3.5 sources release and
then compile a Win32 command-line version using a cut-down DOS front end.
The DOS front end doesn't throw up a splash screen so you can run
background renders--completely within the terms of povlegal--without
getting splashed.

There is no 3.5 DOS front end. HTH, HAND.

The best solution I found yet was to open Pov before starting the script and
activate "Keep single instance". This way no Splash Screen is shown for each
frame. Pov gets the focus at each frame anyway, though.

All platforms can be supported. The POV-Team will only support a Windows,
Mac OS and Linux x86 version.

I suppose there is simply not enough demand for a DOS version, if you
really want one, you can always compile the unix version with DJGPP.

It can be distributed, so long as it meets all the rules set out in POVLegal.
That means it has to display the copyright notice, of course, but it doesn't
have to bring up a splash screen as it would be based on a (nonexistent)
version that doesn't actually bring up a splash screen.
Of course, the Unix version can be redirected to /dev/null and all copyright
text gets sent to the bit bucket; I don't know of any way to prevent that
sort of abuse and still provide a command-line version of POV.

I think this falls into the category "the user is granted the
privilege to modify and compile the source code for their own personal
use in any fashion they see fit."

What if someone distributes a script that invokes the official POV in such
a way as to conceal the copyright notice? I think that's sorta covered under
the clauses about linking, but I wonder whether there's a problem there.

All this would be covered by the "Any attempt to obscure the fact that the
user is running POV-Ray" clauses that can be found in both redistribution
sections (the commercial and unofficial sections) in povlegal.doc. So such
a script being distributed together with POV-Ray in form of an unofficial
version or commercial distribution would not be allowed. Of course only
distributing the script would be legal as the user can do with POV-Ray what
he wants, even obscure the fact that he is running POV-Ray to himself, which
shouldn't be a problem...

The result of following my instructions is to port Pov to the Win32 console
platform. Win32 console apps cannot generate splash screens. The only
requirements in Povlegal for presenting the credits in text-based ports is
that the credits screen is left intact. Unless you are arguing that it is
illegal to port Povray to any command-line platform, I see no reason that a
Win32 console port would be illegal.

Are you sure?
I think (I'm not 100% sure) that console apps can open windows in the same
way as any other windows program.

Pretty much by definition any app which creates windows ceases to be a
console mode app.
Again, are you asserting that it is illegal to port Povray to a text-based
platform? (y/n)

It is not, as long as a) the full copyright message is displayed b) it
is clearly stated that it is an unofficial version and the POV Team is
not responsible for this version and c) you take the burden of
supporting it.

Not true.
For example a program could be used from the console, it could read
commands and execute them, etc, and it could open windows for example for
drawing a graph (matlab works this way in X).

a console app ceases to be a console app when it cannot be run in a console
only environment

Then there's no such thing as a console app under NT, since there's no such
thing as a "console only environment" in NT. This is clearly not a usable
definition.
The truth is, there's a specific definition of what constitutes a "console mode
app" in Windows, and it is absolutely true that an app can meet that definition
and still create windows and draw to the screen. Most don't, but there's no
reason they couldn't if they wanted to.

Of course nobody's asserting that. Equally of course, that won't stop you
from making an ass out of yourself trying to show how horrible everyone
associated with the production of POV-Ray is just because you're not allowed
to use the code for whatever you want.

I know that's what Povlegal says. I'm merely wondering why Warp expressed

You're right, rendrib (BMRT) does it too (and it's obviously a console app).

Well, everything's ok then. I just had to mention it sa most people

What you missed is that this luser has been bashing the POV-Team over in CGRR
for at least five years, by my count. He's a petty little whiner and nothing
more.

As the originator of this thread, I just want to say:
The POV Team Rules. You guys have given us a great product, fantastic
support,
and created a wonderful community. Thanks!!!
Reading this thread has raised one more question in my mind. Is POV-Ray 3.5
not
going to have an "Official" console mode version for the M$ platforms?
Just curious
Tom

Last I heard the Team's official position was that they would
officially support Windows, Linux and Mac. A win32 or dos console app
was not in the list.
Don't worry, the minute the source is available someone will do a
compile.
