I prefer it when the install asks me what I want and where. I end up
rearranging my start menu, etc. according to my standards anyway though, so
I don't find it a big deal to do this yourself. I assume most people
computer literate enough to try raytracing know how to change the start menu
(I'm talking windoze here)

That's nothing compared to realplayer. It's just plain crazy! It put itself
in every possible place! The desktop, they tray, the quickstart menu, the
start menu, the control panel, and of course in start/programs/realplayer.
Such an intrusive program was so ANNOYING that I deleted it immediately.

I know what you mean. At least POVRay doesn't install a hidden run command
to run when the system starts in your registry where only experienced users
can remove it. I often find myself weeding through autoexec.bat, win.ini,
system.ini, registry, etc. to find out where the h*** the program has
inserted it's run command.
Or maybe this should be a feature request ;)

I didn't even realize it put an icon on the desktop... shows how much I use
it :) Seriously, any program I need often (POV, outlook, cdplayer...) I put
a shortcut on the quick launch bar. I think you're right, though, that such
shortcuts are best left to the user to put in.

On the other hand it gives us more chances to admire the new funky* logo, so
maybe it's not so bad...

True, I really appreciate the new "artsy" look of POV-Ray :) Makes it even

I definately agree! I wonder if the website is going to be updated to
reflect the new look? Right now it looks kind of... well, old.

Just what I've done with "ALT+Print Screen". I've rendered it at
1280x1024, but without the text... seems that I like it more with the text,
don't know why... ;)

Okay, got it. However, the vast majority of Windows programs
install such items, so I don't think POV is wrong here.
I tend to let the contents of the start-menu-folders as-installed,
except that I usually add the version number to the program name
(QuickTime becomes QuickTime 5.0.1).
Then I organize the whole folders.
My Start menu set-up is something like (tree is top-down)
Start
Programs
Multimedia
Winamp
Irfanview
Quicktime
Graphics Creation
Paint Shop Pro
POV-Ray
etc. (all of these are folders)
