Ver.: v3.5 beta 1
O/S: WinNT 4.0 SP6a (German)
Computer: AMD Athlon 1400, 256MB

I installed POVray as Administrator, but now I can't access it as a
normal USER. Following error message:
---------------------------------------
ERROR: Cannot find Home entry in registry.

This entry should have been set by the installation program.

If you did .......Otherwise, consult the README.DOC file .....
------------------------------------------------------

Any idea what went wrong ? as admin i could easily run the prog .

The home entry can't be found because the user you're running as doesn't have it.
The keys were installed under HKCU (the current user hive in the registry) for
the user 'administrator'.

I suggest you export the POV-Ray tree from HKCU and import it into the user you
are running the program as (or re-install over the old copy).

There's nothing much I can do about this; the 3.1 version did use HKLM for this
exact reason (allowing all users access), but had the limitation that the person
installing it must have write permission to HKLM, which turned out to be a
problem for a lot of folks.

Well, you could have the program could look in both HKCU and HKLM. Then if
someone wanted it to be available to all users, they could copy the key from
HKCU to HKLM (or you could make an install option to do this).

I could copy it, I suppose, but I am concerned that having two registry entries
for basically the same thing will cause support problems (believe me, it will).
I am 100% sure that someone will complain about it being confusing ...

Let me think about this.

Couldn't the install program ask if you want to instal a "personal" or
"global" copy of the software?

Would the average Win 95-98 user know the terminology and be reasonably
expected to choose correctly ? The answer is no.

Well then you recommend one or the other to the user, just like you do for
the images folder for renders.

Given that 9x/ME varients of Monopoly OS doesn't have any real multiuser
support in the first place, why would the install routine even ask that
question in a 9x/ME environment?

Only ask that question when the installer is running under a multiuser
varient of Monopoly OS (e.g. NT/Win2k); it's much more likely that anyone
who users a multiuser varient of Monopoly OS will know how to pick the
correct answer.

Don't cripple the software just because the average luser can't tell his
burro from a burrow.

Noting, of course, that the installer no longer asks that question for
the same reason, that people don't read.

For the next month. What's it do when XP comes out and Joe Luser is
running a multiuser operating system but doesn't know it?
