The "Photon count", especially noticeable when rendering benchmark.pov,
is going up and down.
Should it not only increment?
You find this message at the bottom of the message window, the behavior
is the same on Windows and Mac.

IIRC the photon count output as progress is that of the current photon block
in progress. if there are multiple, it might restart counting. All iirc.

This happens whenever POV-Ray starts multiple photon shooting tasks:
Each photon shooting task will report its own progress, and no
consolidation is done whatsoever; instead, the progress bar will show
the progress of whichever task sent the most recent status update.
