I own Animation Shop 3, and would like to compile my frames into a nice
format.

AVI (IMHO) stinks, as I would rather play it in QuickTime... any good (free)
MPEG compressors out there?

I have heard of Divex, but am unsure whether it is the standard (dont wan't
some people not able to view my animation :-)

Thanx for any info!

Then you should certainly use MPEG.

See

AVI in itself isn't a codec. I believe it's more of a 'container' file
format, which can hold one of many different codecs, including DivX and a
bunch of others.

I would also recommend mpeg.

DivX *is* MPEG (ok, a subset, but still MPEG).

  Neither is MPEG.

AVI is a container file for virtually any video and audio format. It is
not a video/audio format in itself and does not define in any way the format
of the data it contains.
MPEG is a standardized set of video and audio formats.
DivX is an implementation of a subset of features of the MPEG-4 format.

From those, only DivX is a codec.
'codec' is the binary which allows you to encode and decode to/from a
video or audio format like MPEG. (The idea of codecs is that they are
application-independent, which means that any application supporting codecs
can use them even if it doesn't know them directly.)

> I would also recommend mpeg.

Which one? There are three versions for video (MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4).

Heh, I always thought those were sort of version numbers =)

Actually, the information I gave in my above post was obtained from you a
long time ago, I believe. Or someone in this group, at least.

So, DivX is just an implementation of MPEG? Is there any reason why it seems
to do a better job than any of the other MPEG encodings I've seen before?
Seems to produce fewer artifacts.

No, this is plain wrong.

From their site at <http://www.divx.com/support/faq.php> they explain:

>>>
Q: What is DivX?
A: DivX is the brand name for the patent-pending, premium-quality, MPEG-4
video compression technology developed by DivXNetworks, Inc.. It allows you to
create and watch videos with very high visual quality and relatively low file
sizes. DivX makes it possible, for the first time, to effectively move
high-quality video files over the Internet.
<<<

Be careful not the get confused about their wording "MPEG-4 video compression
technology". This means by no means "MPEG-4 standard" and DivX (which is
much newer btw) is not part of the MPEG-4 standard (or any other MPEG standard
for that matter) at all nor is it compatible with it!!!

Further, as they have filed patents nobody can right now make any other
(legal) codec and you are forced to use what they offer or not use DivX. As
their patent claim makes obvious it is simply a proprietary video encoding
technology developed by a company called DivXNetworks, Inc :-(

I can even prove that DivX is not part of the MPEG-4 standard this way: The
MPEG LA which licenses all patents of the MPEG-4 standard has a website which
lists all the patents used as part of the MPEG-4 standard at
<http://www.mpegla.com/mpeg4/m4patentlist.html>. As you can see, there is no
"DivXNetworks, Inc" in that list, so DivXNetworks, Inc probably with some
intention uses clever wording to give a different appearance to the facts.

They may be placing their data into the MPEG-4 file metaformat*, but that
doesn't make their codec "MPEG-4 standard" which is how many people seem to
interpret the "MPEG-4 video compression technology"...

    Thorsten

* Which is itself a subset of the QuickTime file metaformat: Easily proven by
installing an older QuickTime and trying to open a standard MPEG-4 stream. QT
will tell you (well, programs may show different messages of course) it
doesn't have the codecs to play that movie. This doesn't makes QuickTime part
of the MPEG-4 standard either. Newer versions detect MPEG-4 movie streams and
up to version 5.x tell you they are not supported.

Thanks for the link! Unfortunately, most of the links that I tried (that
seemed promising) only led to dead ends, or canceled projects.

Does anyone have a favorite piece of software (preferably freeware, but...)
that they use to encode Mpeg?

Thankyou for all these informative replies!

Just cancelled a reply after I had thought this was said of RC5. In which
case, I say again here, it does not... crash RC5 anyway.

Are MPEG-1,2, and 4 really that different? I was assuming they were

If more exactly, AVI is a subset of RIFF (which is THE container, BTW)
with... err, very high probability of presence of certain kind of chunks
('vids', for one, is present in 99.(9)% of them; you might run across some
AVI files w/o any video streams at all, or course...).

They are variations of the same concept, but are completely different in
implementation.
