I am working on an animation where one large plane is flying through the
air.
On the ground (deep below) I would like to place a city, buildings need not
be visible, just the impression from a plane at 30.000 feet. My animation
takes place at dusk, so some lights in the city would be nice.
Any idea how to do this?

Best thing for that might be a satellite or aerial photo image mapped to the
ground object. Depends on how much realism you're after.
Placing the lights might not have to be accurate, a grid with some
randomness would be good. Set up a while loop and random numbers with the
otherwise linear grid distorted somewhat by those random numbers. The
vectors used as light source locations obviously, and also for color and
brightness too.

Hmm, high altitude pictures from cities might be fine.
- Where would I be able to find these?
- If it's from a sattelite how do I know the correct scale?

Aerial photos might be the best bet for scaling, you can get to a bunch from
http://terraserver.homeadvisor.msn.com/default.asp
Zoom into the map or choose a city name. If aerial photos exist for a place
it will say. The "topos" are useless for image mapping.
Another thing though, they are only black&white. I haven't seen color
aerial pictures yet.
I almost forgot. There is a great new place with satellite photos that are
in color.

To put a scale to them I think you'll need to compare with maps.
