Hi experts!

I don't want to start an opinion war here but can somebody tell me what
free and LEGAL compression codecs are best to use to create animations.
I need to distribute my animations and therefore the codec needs to be
easily accessable. All I basically need is something for grayscale
animations without sound that'll playback on PC.

Sure hope somebody can give me some advice.

Thanks,
Rene

Use MPEG-1. There are codecs for every platform, including several free
ones.

Although MPEG-1 is the best in the sense that you will get the widest
audience and the widest variety of (free) tools, it's not, however, the best
codec.
An MPEG-4 codec is far better (in both file size and image quality), but
it's a rather new standard and not well supported yet. Some codecs which
use the MPEG-4 standard (well, part of it at least) are ASF and DivX.
I really don't know what's the situation of DivX. AFAIK is a kind of
"hacked" version of ASF, but I have never heard of it being illegal or
anything. If anyone has more info, I'll be interested.

Compatability and animation quality are more important than file size to me.

What utility should I use to convert avi to mpg.... these are 800x600 pixels so
the old dos tool avi2mpg1 doesn't work.

Any ideas?

Rene

Here's a new place I discovered a few days ago. Try
this one out- I couldn't get it to work (yet) on a few
things I've tried, but maybe it works better on stills.

Why bother? I'm not interesting.
But... maybe "Ballet pour ma fille" will be.
