Version 6 of the windows frontend for CMPEG has a new setup and several new
features. Look at http://stols.net .

It can combine several sets of (24 bit POV-generated) TGA's into one
animation using up to 10 masks, allowing selection of image files and
combining them into one frame list, from which the animation is made.

There is a simple preview feature and the generated text files can be edited
easily.

Use of quantization matrices will also be implemented in this version in the
near future.

As before: I would appreciate any comments and suggestions that you may
have!

Is it possible to change the frame rate (to any value) for an animation in your
front end? Or is this a limitation of the CMPEG program. I've tried this but it
gives me an error, I think this would be a useful feature.

The front end is great!

I think its a limitation in the MPEG spec.

The frame rate can be set only using the dropdown box with the 8 fixed
values. Not very flexible, but it's a feature of CMPEG itself. Can't be
helped, I'm afraid...

Glad to see you got this far with it Sander. I was perfectly happy before, now
I'm ecstatic. Thanks once again.
It's really too bad the frame rates are fixed to those choices. I keep wanting
a 15 fps animation since it takes less rendering and can still often look fine
if no fast object or camera motions are done. This doesn't keep me from using
Cmpeg though because it's a quick encode and especially good with the easy 1-2-3
steps to create, build, and then view so simply.
I cannot lie though... I will use something else altogether if it's easier and
better and I can find such a thing. Think that may not happen anytime soon.

Well, VideoMach is available now which is basically a new version
of Fast Movie Processor which can do mpeg now. I have to play around
with it to see if it's any good though.

VideoMach looks really good. But don't go away just yet Sander, please. It's
45 US$ minimum (FMP registration then I guess free upgrade to VM) and 30 day
evaluation and Cmpeg Front-End is still great for quickly throwing together a
moderate Mpg animation. I didn't read everything about VideoMach I could find
just yet but I love the Png input, also the output and processing options make
my VideoWave II look mediocre.
Thanks for the link to that Phil.

One nice thing about the VideoMach is that you can add audio.

Has anybody ever tried to contact the author of cmpeg, to ask wether he
will release the source of it?

Good idea, but then a _real_ programmer will have to look at it. Not me...
