So far I have tried CMPEG, DVMPEG, and AVI2MPG1 all with poor results --
graininess is my main problem -- like looking at a highly compressed
JPEG image. Is there something I am doing wrong, or is it the software,
are my animation frames poor candidates for MPEG, or is it a combination
of these things. Just wondering if anyone can help me with this or
possibly direct me to a good (freeware or shareware, preferably)
compressing program -- one that produces results like OmniVerse's
Martian Dust Storm animation. Thanks.

That dust storm was done with CMpeg. Default setup in fact.
Far as I know all Mpeg files are going to be similar in appearance to partially
compressed Jpeg images. It will depend a lot on the amount of motion and the
colors. I have MGI Videowave II which can do either Mpeg1 or Mpeg2 at different
data rates. It doesn't seem any better really and can be a much larger file,
also much slower to encode (I never use verbose output when using CMpeg).
Of course that isn't to say there might be better encoders than others, I just
haven't seen any if there is. It could be that you are using too low a data
rate, to make a guess as to the graininess you keep getting.

You have to play with the CTL files used by cmpeg. The ipb.ctl that comes
with cmpeg is very general and it doesn't work well with every animation.
Sometimes it's necessary to create your own ctl file.
This happened to me with my "Robot" entry in the IRTC. With ipb.ctl the
quality of the animation was acceptable, but it created an mpg which was over
6 megabytes. I played with the ctl file until I got one that compressed it
to about 4 megabytes without visible degradation of the image.
