I just found a Mpeg2 encoder that will handle .ppm image files. There seems
to be two versions available one for dos and a win32s executable. If anyone
is interested take a look at the following site:

The *.tar.gz file was not downloadable, for me anyway, but the FAQ sheet
there was well worth a look.

Oh well back to the drawing board as they say. I didn't check the
secondary link there presuming they had it archived on site. I will
continue my search though so stay tuned...

Try this and see if you can get it to work. I don't have any animation
projects in the works to test it on or time to do it:

Got the files this time, just now tried it out and didn't get any output
done right. It seems similar to CMpeg in the way it's run on the DOS
command-line but it just wouldn't do as expected. Need more time with it to
figure it out I guess.
Thanks for that "other" URL.

I've been trying to put something together with it myself and it just hangs at
the command prompt. I even left it to run all night and when I came back it was
still stuck. I don't know if it's a problem with the ppm files I was using.
It's says it can only use raw ppm files, but I have no idea what that means.
The source code is included so maybe I can figure something out that way.

Did you guys get anywhere with this?
Recently i've acquired a bunch of MPEG-2 hardware. So i've thought about rerunning
my anim ( http://www.buckosoft.com/gallery/raytrace/tteoac/ )
through MPEG-2; 720x480 looks very cool (well 4x as cool as 320x240).
I mentioned this on the irtc-anim list and Ralph Giles turned me on to that encoder.
I haven't had a chance to play with it yet, but i expect that i will soon.
One thing is i like to render my frames to png so i can use ACDsee thumbnail to
preview
the 3000 frames, so i would like to try dropping png support into it. If there are
basic flaws that you've already fixed, that would help me a lot.
+++
I was surprised that 720x480 is "broadcast quality", i would have thought that to be
low.
It was interesting to learn that VHS tape is lower resolution than that.
Now i get paid to watch Antz all day [1] and i am amazed how good 720x480 looks on a
20"
inch TV (via DVD). I'm used to 1600x1200 on a 21" monitor for stills.
One thing about Antz (on DVD) that is cool, are two chapters on animation techniques.
Must see TV for us animators.
Time to fire up the ol' renderfarm...
[1] Actually i get paid to manipulate the bitstream that was and will be Antz. Most
of
the time the monitor is off, put the DVD on "repeat" and just tweak the bits.
(Most of the other guys in the office watch The Matrix.)

I've seen that too. I've also seen that the blocks are divisible by "16 or 32".
486/32=15.1875 or 30.375
mpeg2enc.c:85
/* round picture dimensions to nearest multiple of 16 or 32 */
mb_width = (horizontal_size+15)/16;
mb_height = prog_seq ? (vertical_size+15)/16 : 2*((vertical_size+31)/32);
Of course, these are NTSC numbers. Our PAL buddies get better resolution.

Depends. They get more lines of resolution, but fewer frames per second.

720x560 25 fps 9843.75k
NTSC is 720x480ish 30 fps
(Of course, the horizontal really depends on the approach you are taking
it, as it is analog)

I got it to work.
I am disappointed with its output. MPEG-2 is about bitrate,
and this encoder reports lots of overruns and underruns. (I think underruns
are the worst, because that sez the next frame will not be decoded in time).
Besides that, the output is still yucky. Sphot's ears
( http://www.buckosoft.com/gallery/raytrace/sphot/ ) get these brutal, large
quantize pixels near his whenever there is any motion.
(The ears stay still, the camera moves.)
I guess i need to tweak lots of silly parameters that i know nothing about.
I am encoding at 4Mbps which is the same bit rate i'm running my hardware encoder.
Interestingly, my DVD player reports that Antz decodes at 4Mbps which looks fabulous.
My next step is to add png support to mpeg2encode. I have 2000 frames which is
about 230MB of png frames, which converts to 2GB of ppm frames. :(
Mike wrote:

One of the docs sez that it is built for DJGPP.
DJGPP is a 32 bit flat memory model extender for DOS. Most likely, its not
compatible with Win95 or NT so rebuilding it is required.

There are 2 types of ppm files; raw and cooked(?). They both have the same style
header.
cooked: raw:
P2 P6
720 480 720 480
255 255
P2 sez that the following data bits are straight ascii; so each pixel is
like printf("%d %d %d ", red, green, blue);
p6 is binary data, or printf("%c%c%c", red, green, blue);
pngtopnm creates the correct style of ppm files.

I have png support added to mpeg2encode, and have it recompiled as a Win32 console
program. You can fetch it from here if you'd like:
http://www.buckosoft.com/gallery/tools/mpeg2/
I still haven't got a decent mpeg2 out of it yet, either underruns or overruns;
so many parameters to tweak, so little time.

Maybe not if others get the same transfer rate I'm getting here trying to
D/L the file. Over 20 minutes it looks like for a 0.9 Meg file?? Probably
just my bad luck.
There couldn't be a better concept than Png to Mpg for POV-Ray animation
making I believe. Way to go. Hope I can get it to work here.

Let us know how it works, Bob. I don't have time to test it myself right
now but would like to keep the option open for later use.

It works well for me: 0.9 Meg at an average rate of 7.5k/sec , about 2 minutes.
So, I wish you a better luck.

I can confirm that Png files can be used. However, like Dick, I cannot seem
to find a suitable setup if there is one, and which also can play the
resulting M2v file back correctly in MS Media Player 6.4 (or another mpeg
player). I've tried most every feasible way to run the encoder so
somethings eluding me still. I'll keep at it until I drop it due to
frustration because the Png format is nice to use directly. Afterall the
animations do play, just strangely and without loopability.

Hello,
what is tha adventage of mpeg2 on mpeg1?? Better compression?
If yes, what is the gain?
Thanks

Gain in quality and better playability perhaps, not exactly sure. The file
sizes of Mpeg-2 always seem quite large by comparison to Mpeg-1 from what
I've seen. Don't know if that is settings related or not. Oh, and Mpeg-2
can have sound added I believe is the main difference.
The thing to look at is the FAQ:

A lot I know! Thanks, didn't think so at all before. Just read some of the
Mpeg FAQ because I was wrong, explains it pretty well there (but not why I'm
wrong so much).

This is a problem i have. Some people get crappy access to my place.
Usually if you have poor routing to povray.org, my site will be painful.
(povray.org sits on T3s in Hartford, CT and buckosoft.com is 2 hops behind that)
Plus, i am on a 64Kb line behind that, which is fine for lite duty, like J. Gimbert
got 7.5KB/s from me which is my top end.
You probably timed your download to coincide with the 178 lurkers here who downloaded
that program in the first 48 hours it was up. (430 downloads in 2 weeks).
Too bad nobody has replied with a success story for using it.

You can probably blame me for that one :)

Yeah, i noticed that. :) I was briefly confused because the referrers are for the
povray
main page; (what!? a link from www.povray.org??) But i decided that is because
povray.org
is framed (which shows a browser bug in the referrer). But most of the first 2 days
refers
were of the news:// variety.
Actually, i purposely didn't link to it from my _own_ site to try to get a little data
on
the newsgroups lurks; but you blew that metric for me. ;) After i noticed your link,
i
had to throw a little text on the page asking someone to share if they figure it out.

Ken:
Just for the sake of those (like me) whose NG server seems to have
dropped some messages, can you tell me what site you're talking
about? I'd like to check out another MPEG encoder, one that can
handle PPMs, as I'm not happy with the quality I'm getting from the
Berkeley package, but I never saw a message with the site URL.
Thanks.

You NG server has nothing to do with it. You most likely have an expiration
time set for news group articles in your news reader program. The groups on
this particular server are not set to expire any message and all that have
ever been posted here are available for review.

This is Dick's original post:
I have png support added to mpeg2encode, and have it recompiled as a Win32 console
program. You can fetch it from here if you'd like:
http://www.buckosoft.com/gallery/tools/mpeg2/
I still haven't got a decent mpeg2 out of it yet, either underruns or overruns;
so many parameters to tweak, so little time.

You need to set your server properties for news.povray.org in Netscape.

I like the Berkeley encoder. I think it produces pretty good mpegs,
and they are much much smaller than the likes of cmpeg. Bummer that
it doesn't produce mpeg-2s.
Here's the settings i used on one run:
PATTERN IBBPBBPBBPBBPBB
OUTPUT e:\povwin3\Buckosoft\mpegs\tteoac.mpg
INPUT_DIR f:\povwin3\BuckoSoft\tteoac
INPUT
tteo*.ppm [0001-1752]
END_INPUT
BASE_FILE_FORMAT PPM
INPUT_CONVERT *
FORCE_ENCODE_LAST_FRAME
GOP_SIZE 30
SLICES_PER_FRAME 1
PIXEL HALF
RANGE 10
#PSEARCH_ALG LOGARITHMIC
#PSEARCH_ALG SUBSAMPLE
PSEARCH_ALG TWOLEVEL
#PSEARCH_ALG EXHAUSTIVE
BSEARCH_ALG CROSS2
#BSEARCH_ALG EXHAUSTIVE
IQSCALE 8
PQSCALE 10
BQSCALE 25
REFERENCE_FRAME DECODED
I tried the EXHAUSTIVE algorithm which increased the encoding time from about
6 hours to a couple of months without any real improvement in quality or size.

And all I ever managed to get was a garbled animation; seems no matter what
I tried (what I could understand or not) refused to play correctly. Always
looked like a TV set with the vertical and horizontal askew.

Thanks, Dick. I'll give these a try. I don't know much about this
program, but I'm learning.
I likewise would like to produce some mpeg-2 files, but that's
another fight.

DOH! Well, of course it doesn't. Forgive the cranial-rectal inversion...
I
was thinking about my ISP when I wrote that.

Thanks for the tip. I made a change in my configuration that
(hopefully) will mean that I won't miss any more messages.

In order to change the quality or file size when using the Berkeley
encoder, you must change the three Q-scale values.
For example,
IQSCALE 4
PQSCALE 8
BQSCALE 8
will get you results that are closer to those of CMPEG. Using a value of 1
for all three will result in high quality and large size. Using 31 for all
three results in very low quality and small size.
I've also noticed that, given the same parameters, the dos port produces
lower quality files than the Linux version.

I don't suppose you could quote the spec for PAL VHS could you? I know
it's less, but as I hope to put some stuff on VHS one day I don't want
to overburden my poor PC with too much work...

There's square and non-square pixels apparently. PAL has a 768 X 576 or 768 X
288 frame size according to:

Since the horizontal is not discrete and is contained in an analog signal, you
can have just about as many horizontal pixels as you want. 640x480 will give you
square pixels, but 768 will match the signal a little cleaner.
Also, 768x576 at 25 frames per second is really two 768x288 fields per frame, and
thus 768x288 x 50 fields per second. One field has all the odd scan-lines, the
next field has all the even scan-lines. Then you also get into the problem of
field-major (?) or field-minor, where you need to figure out which to send first,
the odd field or the even field. Also, I'm not sure, but I seem to recal that VHS
just records one field of two, but don't hold me to that without checking.
