Redirected over to here from p.b.a.
They don't *have* to be any particular format really. What should be
considered however is what the majority of people have to play the
animations. Seems most have avi and mpg decoding at least for PCs
especially; Apples QuickTime for mov files on the Mac OS (and PC too) is
another I suppose.
Anyway, anyone could post any form of animation. Self executing ones would
be very good except for some worry about the exe file being d/l and run,
plus the fact they add on a precious bit to the file size which counts a
lot here.
All in all a format not widely used is not guaranteed to get as much
attention unfortunately. I'd like to have the best possible
encoder/decoder, just can't be certain of everyone else having it.

Self executing ones would be *very bad*.
Hey - check out my new self-extracting "melissa" mpeg :)
And the super cool "ExploreZip" mpeg.
Even with my Steel Skivvys(tm) on, i never run alien executables
on my machine unless i have to; and you shouldn't either.
Every time you install or run alien executables, you increase
your likelihood (ever so slightly) of having to revisit "FORMAT C:"
Especially executables from a news server. Just pull the trigger now.
P.S. How's come the media isn't glomming on to the fact that
all of the killer email virii only affect M$ mail users?

Last time I got a virus, it was a CIH from a newsgroup. And I was using
Netscape Messanger. Please explain your reasoning behind this (IMHO)
ludicrous statement.
It's the virus scanner that does the work, not the mail client.

Dick probably meant that there was a bug in Outlook Express (and there
still is unless you haven't patched it or have a new version) which
would cause it to automatically launch specific MIME attachments,
which is of course enough to get you in trouble. MS have it fixed but
only because their corporate network got hit by Melissa :)

Well he did say e-mail viri - and M$ products to tend to have more
holes in them than some others. Aside from Peter's suggestion there's
also Word macro viruses which can, in theory (and practice if you have
your settings "just so") open up and run just from looking at the text
- and possibly without even opening the document (I'm not sure if the
Preview Pane some M$ mail clients use would activate macros under any
circumstances - silly if they did IMHO).

Yup - though some are more open to abuse than others... and yes, I DO
tend to use M$ stuff myself. I also keep Norton AV relatively
up-to-date :)
Never been infected yet. Only seen a few viruses - all on
clients/friends PC's.

That really depends. Outlook Express doesn't load Word files (from what I
know), but Outlook is integrated into Word, so I believe that any E-Mail is
opened into a sub-program that, basically, IS Word, only it looks more like
a preview window.
Actually, say a determined hacker gets your friend's IP and E-Mail address,
perhaps through ICQ or a Quake server that he runs, for instance. He can
use an IP bouncer to mask his IP and use your friend's, then change the
e-mail address in his mail client and shoot you an e-mail with an attachment
of a Word document with the Melissa virus.
If you happen to use Netscape Messenger (which, the spell checker in OE
suggested 'Massager' when I spelled it wrong. hehe), and you see that your
friend e-mailed you a "funny Word document". You open the document, and
BAM! You got Melissa!
You're not truly safe no matter WHAT you use.

Well yeah - if you open an attchment in anything (well, any attachment
that can run "code" - even a humble macro) then you're open to
viruses.

2 Things.
No.1 VIRUS CHECKERS - Nav seems very good
No.2 Have word on high security so it asks you whether you want macros
active or not. Tell them not to open, look at the doc, ring your friend.
Destory document. No Problem.
I agree with the inital thread EXEs should not be used for animating, I
never look at them due to virus threat
True safety is just a deliousion anyway, just like your never truly secure
no-matter what you use, it is only degrees of safety that you have.
