Then Blender is not a bad option at all, although I never understood the
interface (nor really took time to dig seriously into it, I confess) :-(

Yes, looks a good choice, and there are other free modelers out there
that I'm getting to know them. the interface is now customizable
although I haven't tried Blender just yet.

Wings3d might also be a good choice for you. http://www.wings3d.com/
Some time ago I read or heard about that change in the Blender
interface. I shall go back to it one day certainly ;-) At this moment I
am quite happy with Silo2 (which is not a free product).

Blender is a complete suite, but Wings 3D is more intuitive and fast to
use (and open source, released under BSD license).

I think you are mistaken here. The site says: [quote] Wings 3D is open
source and completely free for use in both personal and commercial
projects.[unquote]; and I have always used it for free.

hmmm, I see... maybe it was commercial before because of what I have
read in YouTube, glad to read that, thanks Thomas.

Then YouTube did not know what it was talking about :-) because for as
long as I have known Wings (>10 years) it has been free.

Probably, and I didn't took the time to look myself, I have so much to
read now, this 3D world is huge and with many 3D options to chose from
and investigate to see what they do, is awful lot of time just doing that.
