If you merge an object that has a layer named the same as the current 
scene, it results in a duplicate layer entry that can't be deleted 
unless you delete both...

I tend to make a layer called 'invisible' which is hidden to keep my 
workspace uncluttered when I'm working on details when scenes get complex...

I've also seen this, but was unsure of how I got the two layers named the
same. Now I know :-)
