v3.3 hangs while initialising, may be because I am not using real windows
dll's with wine (as win2k files don't work right), cannot use wine to
install moray as the installer dies with the error 'no log file' (or
similar)

going to have a go with some older versions later, and see if I get more joy
using real windows files (time to find my win98 cd...)

Technically, the installer isn't neccessary. You can just copy an
installation over....
