If it were an improper file format of if Pov were unable to find
it an error would be returned to that effect and the render would stop.

Only thing I can think of is that the waterlevel is too high, the
heightfield is scaled too small in Z, the TGA file has very little
contrast.
Does Moray show the heightfield as flat, too?

Yes! Moray shows the heightfield flat.
I will try for a different value in Z.
Thanks.

Yes! I clicked on READ.
Yes! I altered the Z factor.
Nothing! Always flat
Thanks for your reply.

If you will send me the tga file I will examine it for you and let you know
if it contains bad data or no data at all.

The tga file contains ho height data because it has only one color - black.
With HF's you need to understand how they work when you are designing the
image to make terrain with it. Black = no height and white = maximum height.
For example if you go into a paint program and put white lettering on a
black background then render it the white lettering will become a raised
text object. If you put black lettering on a white background you will
end up with a raised background when you render it with the letters sunken
into the surface.
There is a great discussion on height fields at this site that you should
read for detailed info on the subject:
http://www.daylongraphics.com/products/leveller/hf.htm
P.S. Please cancel your last post - the one with the attached image.
This is a non binaries group and images should not be posted here.
Thanks,

ok, that tga you posted is fine - however being totally black it will only
create a perfect flat plane.
open it up in psp, put some big white splodges on it, then try again.
black = 0 height
white = max height
