What might the other part of teh problem be?

Oh, yeah. Planes are alway infinite- morays sizing only changed the wireframe
representation. This is helpful in cases where your scale is very high. This
is also true of Point Lights, which are only a point- the size is only a
factor of the wireframe, not of the light itself. Again, this is to increase
the visibility of the object during the modeling process- it has no bearing on
the rendering process.
