On the 3rd of January 2015 the renewed TC-RTC site will become
operational. Amongst the improvements, most notably will be the
possibility to run two Challenges at the same time and of different
lengths.
Challenge 1 will remain our familiar one of four months, this time
without any mid-challenge break.
Challenge 2 will be dedicated to short periods on specialised topics
(e.g. CSG, Cube Variation), selected methodologies (e.g. Matrix, Media,
Subsurface Scattering), or just quick fun (e.g Stickmen, Train Faces,
Blob Madness). Challenge 2 will run for a couple of weeks in general
followed by the familiar period of voting. However, Challenge 2 will not
be in constant use and in-between sleep periods will ensure that people
get enough time to work on Challenge 1. We do not want to over-exert our
members!
Topics for Challenge 2 can be selected from the topics list or can be
brought forward by every member through the appropriate channels.
Starting on January 3rd, we will run a short test on the site, one week
upload (from 01-03 ca 18:00 hours to 01-10 ca 18:00 hours) followed by
two weeks voting (from 01-10 ca 18:00 hours to 01-24 ca 18:00 hours) and
focussed on Challenge 2. Start/end hours may be different of course. A
test topic will be launched and we want to ask you to upload to it as
with an official Challenge. Please report any difficulties or unwanted
behaviour so that we can report back to Colin and have them corrected.
We do not expect issues with Challenge 1 but if something untoward
happens there please let us know.
Last but not least, we wish you all the best possible things and
inspiration for 2015!

Now with the Second Challenge available. We will be running shorter
Challenges alongside the four month one. That should keep DrNo happy. :-)
Speaking of him and his "roll your own" software. And full credit to
him, for that.
We must remember that it is a "Rendering" challenge not solely a
"Raytracing" one.
Never the less, I am sure we can show a little bias and have a short
code Challenge soon. :-D
What sort of time should be best for that sort of Challenge? Bearing in
mind the the voting period is fixed at two weeks.

Great news, thanks for the effort you put into this Thomas/Stephen.
For me the 4 months works well, of course if I ever complete an image in 2
months I would be wishing it was shorter but I could always work on a second
entry or with the new format take part in one of the shorter challenges which
sound very interesting.

For me about 2 weeks seems a reasonable length to generate an image, I think any
shorter than that and the risk of too few or low quality entries will be a
problem, I think it would be nice to have some POV only type rounds like
CSG/Blobs/short code rounds but these need to be few and far between so as not
to often exclude other renderers especially as the main competitor to the site
does not use POV.

Good, that fits in with needing to have a two week voting period. So the
shortest time span will probably a four week minimum.

Oh no! Second challenge is CSG? Since going to Blender for most things, I think
my Pov skills have gotten a little rusty. I hope to dazzle this round, hehe.

Hmmm.
Can't seem to log in.
The links for viewing the results and entries don't seem to work right when
you're not logged in. I even get another entry that I didn't see when
voting....
I think the website might need some testing.

I think Lanuhum's alternative version of the exporter does support CSG. :-P

View All Entrants still gives vastly different results between "guest" and
"logged - in". Final scores only lists 2 entrants in either mode.

As guest, you see the entrants' overview for each current Challenge in
exactly the same way. The only difference is with Challenge 2 when you
select an image and it brings you first to the image info page where a
thumbnail enables you to view it. This is *not* the case with Challenge 1.
As logged in, you see only *your own* entries, either for Challenge 1 or
for Challenge 2. That is not different from the old site version.
I do not understand your comment on final scores however.
