Hm... I /think/ I'm sort of obliged to join this challenge... time to
heat up the engine and get the USRA Heavy Santa Fe rolling again.

Why not make just make tina chep the new irtc.org?

When TC-RTC was started it was meant as a temporary stand in for the
IRTC. But it has never grabbed the attention of the ray tracing
community. If you can think of anything that would help promote it.
Thomas and I would welcome any suggestions.
And just to make it clear, TC-RTC is not associated with Pov-Ray in any
way other than the administrators are long time users of Pov-Ray. In
fact the rules were changed to allow any renderer to be used as one of
the early members built and uses his own system.
It is not just a matter of changing its name. As always there is more to
the story.
What we need is for lots of people to enter and lots of people to vote
for the entries.
Why don’t you join and enter an image or vote for the next challenge. We
have a forum as well.
Everyone is welcome.

A coherent name with a coherent url.
So far it seems called "tina chep", yet the not obvious url is
www.tc-rtc.co.uk/index/index.html

At least www.tc-rtc.co.uk is giving a good page. And google find it
first on just "tc-rtc"

short acronym is good for URL: irtc was easy to remember, but that
"minus" sign is just a PITA for tc-rtc (where is it ? second, third,
fourth position... too much pain for a brain)

tinachep is a too long acronym (sort of; "che" is a quite large bit),
and "KNX is not X" is a tired meme, just a bit older than "all your base
belong to us"... even "the cake is a lie" is faded, like all the YA...
pattern

And irtc was not about povray. just raytracers.

I am not so sure about location finding for interested people. That
sounds rather trivial to me. One of the criticism I have heard however
was that the topics (based on book titles) were not liked, or some such.
Too much pain for the brain? ;-)

Really? I do not remember any other raytracer used than POV-Ray... But
then, I may not have really paid attention to that as it was POV-Ray in
most cases... or am I wrong?

And there is more I think. When the IRTC restarted, TC-RTC suffered a
bit from people turning back to the old familiar grounds, but it seems
that the real interest in these kind of competitions/challenges has
dwindled as the IRTC too suffered in the end from a lack of uploads,
especially compared to the heydays of the competition. And many of the
strong artists from those days have disappeared over the last five to
ten years. Other interests? Other challenges?

Hi Thomas,

nearly every ray-tracer thinkable was used in the irtc. I have only data for the
first period up to 2006. Pov was used most, but for example some 10 percent of
the entries were made with 3DS closely followed by Bryce. Next seems to be
Blender.

Don't ask why I have such statistics...

Best regards,
Michael

My memory is selective ;-)

I remember one image (Decay, 2003) because it was made by a colleague
from work back then, which was modelled in Blender and rendered in
POV-Ray... I don't know why it was not rendered also in Blender though.

Maybe because back then Blender's built-in rendering engine (if it even
had any then) sucked?

Yes, I have been wondering at that. When was Blender's render engine
launched? I have the impression that back in 2003 there was none...

I think Blender always came with its own render engine -- the so-called
Blender Internal -- but it was seemingly just a scanline back then:

http://www.blender.org/features-gallery/gallery/archive/2003/

The old Blender Internal renderer got a raytracer integrated but is too
messy, too late. They intend to make the new Cycles unbiased path
tracer the default engine eventually. It's built into the latest
releases and already provides some awesome results at minimal cost for
set up and I'll be using it. Just hope my modelling skills can match
the lighting... :)

I am slowly learning Blender, so I am curious.

Three weeks to go; three images uploaded so far; we need more work!

No. The 31st of August is when the voting ends. We allow two weeks for
that so the deadline for entries is midnight of 17/8/12 BST.
To be honest I cannot find where to change that particular text.

still have two complete months to prepare an entry :-)

To Stephen: as administrators, we are only allowed to change the
floating top bar. Only Colin seems to have access to that part of the site.

I'm still wondering. The Tina-chep-site seems to be unvisible to google
completely. If I search for my own entríes I find only pictures from people with
the same name than mine but not even a hint to my pictures. If I google for
Thomas or Stephen I find only pictures published in the pov-newsgroups. The
google search-engine is a bot, may be tc-rtc is rejecting bots, so we will never
came up with google.

Best regards,
Michael

have point there about visibility.

actually this sounds like TC-RTC is quite dependent on the time and
interest of a single person. After the fate that befell IRTC (twice...)
this might be an issue of concern for people considering to join in.

Of course, you cannot pull a team of web site administrators out of
your hat, but you might want to ensure that the server, code, data and
backups are at least accessible by a larger number of people, and that
the system is documented to a point that someone else could setup a
new server running TC-RTC should the need arise.

You are quite right Christian,
To give some history, after the IRTC was down for about a year. Steve
Paget (you may remember St) decided to give something back to the
community. He contacted a web developer in his town and commissioned
TC-RTC. So the web site is owned by Colin and we only use it. When Steve
died a couple of years ago I contacted Colin and said that I would be
willing to keep it running and Thomas de Groot kindly agreed to assist
in the running of the site. (I say assist but Thomas does all the work.)
We don’t own the code and cannot change it. As the memory of Steve has
faded Colin has lost some of his enthusiasm for maintaining it.
We have not bothered him too much with change requests. Partly because
he does not give it a high priority (that means that he does not answer
emails) and partly because the costs are minimal so you get what you pay
for. We are a small group and most of us know the limitations and just
live with it.

So that is it in a nutshell. If you can think of a practical solution we
would be pleased to hear it.

I remember St.

BTW, why not simply a free blog? Something like tc-rtc.blogspot.com or
tc-rtc.wordpress.com? Administration hurdle is minimal and can be
shared between a few select accounts. Image posting and polls are among
the features, plus comment system builtin, etc.

With so many cheap free solutions out there for creating and sharing
content, I don't see the reason for bothering with a "home page".

Hmmm... an idea I need to think about... In first instance I am not very
blog-minded, but who knows...

you could create a dummy account just to feel the hang of it. You could have a
main blog topic about the current competition, a WIP topic to let people post
their images and a poll topic later to decide winners.

The good thing about blogs really is that administration is a breeze (you
basically do nothing besides posting new blog topics when you have to).

I admit that my experiences as a web-admin (for a very small site) are long
gone. I remember there was a way to restrain bots but I forgot about the details
completely. Since I never have used or visited a blog I have no idea about their
possibilities. Can they give us all the goodies of a "real" web site? Updating
images, voting for the next topic and can we avoid the disadvantages? Thai or
Russian girls are quite pretty, but I'm not in need of one.

Regards,
Michael

Yes, and I'm one of them.

I'm just considering to chance my nick here to adjust it to the abbreviation of
my real name I use with Tina Chep. May be others could think abouut this issue
too...

As I do ever researches about the new topic I just did some researches about the
special kind of railway I will depict in RL yesterday. Riding the "Mammut" and
two other coasters were really a great research work... WOW...

Best regards,
Michael

Using Firefox, you can use the Adblock Plus addon. Result: all adds
disappear.

Spamming is a worry although the most of the wave seems to have gone for
a few months now. Maybe the admins have come up with a better way of
fighting back.

Indeed, and that is good :-)

To be more correct: Adblock Plus is an /extension/ to Firefox.

They didn't disappeared but we are served with adds the web-site thinks we are
want to look at. I have no idea about reading out cookies, but this may be the
reason that some of us see old ladies and others see young. I cannot remember to
have visited any site within the time that I have my actual machine which can
lead them to judge that I might react to the younger ones, but may be they only
judge that I'm male and of some 50 years of age and think that I may be
interested in a young russian or thai girl. Young russians were the adds just
some minutes ago in the forum. The muslim girls appeared only once.

But in fact the adds are only an annoyance and not more. And in this material
world we have to accept them to reduce costs.

Regards,
Michael

Two major problems with this option:

1) the images are only visible to members. Making them visible to the
world ensures risks of spamming if not changing them or switching them.

2) images are not kept on the forum. Try to view images uploaded some
time ago and you will see that they are not available anymore.

I was looking forward to that steam engine. Unless you were hacking away at the
Povray 3.7 source code, in which case, carry on.

Yeah, me too. But somehow I just couldn't push myself to tackle that
