Hi,
I don't know if this has been asked before or not, but is it
possible to run a competition, (Stills), alongside the main IRTC, for
newusers?
With the current topic being the "Sea", I think that it is hard to
produce a good image that will match some of the experienced guys and girls.
(Especially me, anyway)
So how about a comp for newusers that could be any subject, within the
rules, to run alongside the main competition?
The only judges for it could be the IRTC Team, and PoV-Ray Team, and
nobody else, or keep it as it is, and everyone votes, and just judge purely
on merit and design.
To me, this makes sense. I think that the images could be very
interesting for everybody, and would let the less experienced users have a
decent chance of competition. Or am I talking proverbials here? ;o)
What do you think?
~Steve~

What is a newuser and how would you control who enters ?
The honor system ?
(I think there would be too much room for abuse of the system.)

Yes, good point, Ken. It's a shame really. I think you can see where
I am coming from. It would be nice to have a sort of *amateur* competition.
I guess that I will just have to try harder. ;o)
Or I could be the only entry, and win! Hehe! (no, I would lose on
technical merit!) :o(
Thanks for reply, ~Steve~

If you say in your text file that it's your first entry, then judges will
take this into consideration.
By taking part you will gain a lot of experience, the judges will pay
attention to all aspects of your image and will comment giving you
specific and possibly detailed advice.
You've nothing to lose by taking part so have a go. And good luck.

Hi Steve,
thanks for that, I will at some point. But not now. I
have entered the world of computer graphics, and yet I can draw quite
freely, and have a good imagination. My problem is learning the code,
(although I am not doing too bad at that, atm), and applying it to the
screen. If I ever get somewhere like Gilles Trans level, (or yours,
[screwdrivers, brill!], or others that I have seen, for that matter), then I
will be truly happy!
I understand EVEN more now. The fact that you can come up with what you
have seen in your head, or planned on paper, and USE the sources available
to you is a challenge in itself, and I for one, look forward to entering the
competition one day, not with a view to winning, (sarc."Yeah!"), but with a
view that 'someone' else has, maybe, had a vote for your picture! Ego
booster indeed!

My first (and until now, only) image in irtc was the horror round in 1999.
It was actually my first "big" scene (hand coded of course). I had only used
povray for about half a year, but it came out 27/110 (or something).
I belive it was the idea and the modelling job who caused it, because my
textures was terrible.
If you have an idea for irtc, do the scene and enter the competition, at
least you'll learn a lot.

is a povray competition and thus a toy competition and thus not worth their

Hi Peter, you've been helping me with some good advice, and I
appreciate it, thanks. (The spaceship is coming on fine).
As I have just said to Warp, I would like to enter the next
competition, so who knows? I'll give it a go anyway.
I had a look at your entry, to me very impressive, (especially after
six months!), I can definately see the *horror* in it! :o)

Hi Warp. I didn't mean to sound condescending or anything. On the
contrary, *I* think some of you guys and girls, IMO, are as good as
*professionals*. From what I've seen, that's the catagory I would put you
povers in, but that's because I concider myself an amateur, that's all.
Can you tell me Warp, when the next topic will be released, for the
next stills comp? I'd seriously like to put my mind to it and have a go.
Many thanks, ~Steve~

It's a common (mis)conception that "amateur" means more or less a newbie,
someone who doesn't know very well how to do the thing, and "professional"
means someone very skilled in the task, one who makes excellent quality job.
This is common in many languages (finnish and apparently also english).
We have to remember that the meaning of these words has little to do with
how skilled the person is. "Amateur" means that the person is making it as
a hobby and receives no money for it (or if he receives some money, it's so
little that he can't live only with it). "Professional" means that the person
is doing it as his job, he makes money with it and lives making that job.
An amateur can be better than a professional. For example an amateur golf
player can win a professional one. Still, the amateur is an amateur (hobbyist)
and the professional is still professional (he makes money by doing it).
Of course it's more common that a randomly selected professional makes
better job than a randomly selected amateur because the professional has
more experience. Still, that doesn't mean that an amateur can't be better
than many professionals.
: Can you tell me Warp, when the next topic will be released, for the

No idea, sorry.

Next topic will be announced sometime on the 1st September.
It usually gets posted to irtc.stills within a day or so.

When I enter the IRTC, I'm not trying to create an entry that will win first
place, or even second or third. What I try for is an entry that will make
it into the top third of the rankings, and possibly get an honorable
mention.

There is a planned CD collection in the works. You are the judge. You submit
the 10 best images ever, ever (produced by yourself) and submit it to a
pov-team-owned server. That's it.
Submission form details, sever policy, etc., are still being worked out. But
the project is laid out at

I've mentioned this before, but why don't you use the competition itself as
the judge? Something like 4 points for 1st, 3 for second, 2 for third, 1
for any of the merit categories. Anyone with x points (probably around 3 or
4) is no longer a newbie and can't enter the newbie comp anymore.
Of course, a pro can enter and win the newbie comp.... once. Then they're
no longer a newbie.
The problem is that people could create new ids to win, but why would they?
Most of the fun of the IRTC is the recognition anyway.

On the indicated web page, you say (my emphasis):
Please do not submit images whose copyrights have been assigned to
someone else, *such as previous IRTC entries*.
But the irtc copyright page states that:
[the entrant] retains all copyright and ownership rights
Does it mean that you only want images that weren't available anywhere
else before? Or images whose owner has kept all right to himself until
now? (the irtc copyright grants some limited reproduction and use rights
to the irtc and the sponsors)

The creator of the image retains copyrights as per the IRTC document.
The (non-povray-enthusiast) purchaser of the CD sure would be bummed if he bought
all the IRTC CD's AND this one, and found 20% repetition!
If it's sitting on your web page, sure, send it in. You have in effect assigned a
distribution right to Yahoo, etc., but that right is just to put it on your web
page--it doesn't forbid you giving it away to be sold...
