Well - yes - they are "pyramids" in the sense that they are the expansion of the
6 faces of a cube outwards from the center.  Any object textured with this
pattern shows the "shell" at that distance from the center.

If you're familiar with isosurfaces, the analogy would be a different threshold,
or level set, of the function.
