Right - but assuming you get a good bounding of the objects (check out jr's
work, and my incomplete attempt(s) )
then perhaps you can use the size of the bounding box of the intersection
between two objects - and let POV-Ray do the heavy lifting.

if there's no intersection, then how big is the bounding box of the intersection
{} ?
0 or NAN, or...
