Hi all,
After I first created an animation of Escher's magic ribbon (see
p.b.animations), I have now reproduced the original image featuring these
ribbons. See the attached image for the result. I hope you like it. I am happy
with it. I may still make some minor final tweaks, but it's pretty much done.
Working on this image made me appreciate Escher's original drawing even more.
The illusion itself is of course interesting. The composition is simple yet
helps to enhance the illusion. Furthermore, without access to 3D software,
Escher nevertheless managed to create quite realistic shading. Finally, he had
to use a few hacks to make the illusion work and create a nice composition but
they're quite subtle and most people would not notice them. For example, where's
the light actually coming from? The perspective of the cube is a bit funny as
well...
Cheers,
Erwin
