Maybe some tolerances in the temp sensor. After all, they're not there for
high-precision measurements.

What type of processor do you have installed?

For my Core i7, the guys at the shop told me (after having checked on the
internet and in the Intel specs) not to worry about the core(!) temp of, IIRC,

The overall "CPU temperature" is a different thing of course; if *that* reaches

roasted by then :P

Also note that other architectures may have totally different limits of course.

That, I was told, would be the most reliable criterion: Before reaching critical
thermal levels, the CPU would try to throttle itself down or, if the OS wouldn't
allow, shut down completely.

My system actually even chooses to overclock itself a bit (21x instead of 20x),
so I guess it must be more than happy with its own thermal status.

And after all, why not? If you don't demand power, the system can happily
throttle down - not to prevent overheating, but to save energy.
