The article stated that 0.86% of all computers were infected, and that spam
accounted for more than 97% of all email sent.

Going by those numbers, and guessing that individual spammers are capable of
infecting thousands (if not millions) of computers, than I would guess less
than a thousand people worldwide (and possibly less than 100).
