The theme transitions can be carried by an object or series of objects that are
present in different sequences. For example, one scene could be child's room
filled with space posters and close with a half-finished Lego model of a space
craft, followed by a scene from the future with a very similarly built,
full-sized craft (presumably designed by the now grown up child from the
previous scene) shot from a similar angle.

There is also the possibility of making collaborative story boards of the
opening and closing shot of a scene, distributing the source(s) of a single
object that must be present in the scene some way, and giving the users
complete freedom within such constraints.

I am curious, though, as how working with such a media would be. A simple
animation of a walking figure going around the edge of the dome is far more
interesting than that same figure walking across a flat frame.

Just some thoughts.

P.S. Unless you have a render farm or access to such a thing, I would recommend
distributed rendering.
