What about using a hollow sphere_sweep with differenced clear ends?
difference{
  sphere_sweep{
  //any sweep from A to B, 0.9 thick
  }
  sphere{A,1 pigment{Clear}}
  sphere{B,1 pigment{Clear}}
}
