Yeah, ain't that the truth.  I might add that a lot of other Windows
Programs exhibit similar behavior, for example MS-WORD (Blargh!).
If this problem is consistent, take note if is happening in other editors as
well.
That might give you a clue.

If you're running win-XP with less than 256mb RAM, it could be
page-swapping.
