I have look high and low.  Why does the render hang up on "smooth"?

  height_field {
    tga "Track Tile.tga"
    scale <SCALE_FACTOR, 45.000000, SCALE_FACTOR>
    smooth
  }
  texture {
    pigment {
      image_map {
        tga "TrackTile_TEX_960.tga"
      }
      scale SCALE_FACTOR
      rotate <90, 0, 0>
    }

    finish {
      ambient <0.35, 0.35, 0.32>
      diffuse 2.5
      crand 0.1
    }
  }
}

The render runs fine if I comment out "smooth" but I really need to have it
as the render is very jagged looking.

Any help would be great, thanks.
