Take a look at the following image:

......the problem is with the outer layer of the structure (the green
nanotube), which is material{M_NB_Winebottle_Glass}. The pixel level
sparkly dots spoil the glassy look. What I'd like is a look more like the
ruby glass in this:

....of course I've tried changing to the ruby glass, and indeed changing all
the settings in the material, but it seems it's not the glass color or
basic properties that are to blame, but rather the complexity of the image
behind. I can't seem to fix it except by going for an ior near to 1.0 - at
which point it ain't glass no more!

I can just give up on the idea of having the outer tube as glass, and
instead go for a dark metal, but I thought I'd post to see if anyone has a
solution.
