A thought has occured to me, I don't really use windows but I do have a
windows machine turned on at all times under my desk. What regimen
would be followed for network retry, this would probably cause the hard
disk to fire up every time it did a retry and after about 10 days or so
would get quite annoying if the retrys were quite regular.
I don't know if it's possible for programs to recognise when power
saving is acitve or not, but that may be something to think about.
