I was right there with you right up to the point where you mentioned
tachyons, which haven't been proven to exist.
Cerenkov radiation is the shockwave from plain ol' particles that happen to
be going faster than whatever the speed of light is in the medium in which
they're traveling. Same as a sonic boom, but with light.
