That seems unlikely.  It may be better known in our little corner, but looking
at most of his page it seems he's little more than a democoder who happens to
have a knack for explaining complex ideas somewhat better than everyone else.
It's certainly not research.  It seems more likely that people in the industry
would use some of the ideas I've seen in SIGGRAPH papers than Mr. Elias's 
watered-down treatment.
