Not related to POV but I have a serious problem (not on this laptop,
on the desktop instead).

Basically, no command-line application works. It gives an error
0xC0000142 ("ntwdm.exe: The application failed to initialize"). The
scarce resources I found online suggest that it is related to the
Windows desktop heap size, but changing that didn't help. Safe mode
helps neither. I can't start sfc.exe or any other command-line
diagnostics tool from either Windows or the recovery console. What
could it possibly be?

Somebody please help me, it's gotten even worse!

I thought I've found a solution. I started wowexec.exe once and then
everything seemed OK, even after rebooting. But now even wowexec won't
start :( Please, I don't want to have to spend my holidays
reinstalling Windows and all the software I need...

Yep. They pointed me to a KB article I've already tried. When I told
them that, they suggested a reinstall. Very helpful and very typical
:)
