There are two official Windows versions of POV-Ray 3.1g: a Pentium-II
optimized version, and the regular version. The current beta of POV 3.5 is
optimized for a number of different processors simultaneously, resulting in
a significantly larger executable file, but one that is guaranteed to be
optimized for your processor, whatever it is.

In fact, AFAIK there isn't such a big difference between a P-II and a P-III.
I don't think a compiler could do much more for a P-III than it can do for a
P-II.

I do know that in the Linux world the general advice is for people with P-III's
to get 386 binaries instead of P-II binaries, since the P-II optimizations used
will actually make it slower on the P-III than the 386 binary.

Steven Schmitt have a pentium 3 and 4 optimized version of 3.1g, that is
significantly faster than the official compile - even on a pentium 2. Go

AFAIK P4 is slow to execute *any* previous code. You need to optimize
specifically for P4 in order to get some speed (and even then you don't
get all the speed you _could_ get with those GHzs).

IIRC, the biggest difference is SSI (I think that's the acronym). I think
it's similar to 3DNow!.
